Four ways to get your home sale-ready in January

For sellers looking to list their house in January, then the New Year could be an opportune time to give your home a good clean and declutter so it can be sale-ready. Your house being in good shape is crucial to it getting sold and this can be done by giving it a thorough clean and reorganising your property.

Here at Expose Property, we are an estate agent, covering areas in London and the South East, and can help you with the selling of your property.

Clean up Christmas clutter

An ideal place to start your January deep clean is by clearing out any of the Christmas clutter. In December 2021, research revealed that Christmas decorations are a turn-off for buyers at viewings, so if you’re trying to get your home sold then make sure your house is free of festive items.

Apart from getting rid of the garlands, sellers should also check their kitchen cupboards which can be filled with festive food and drink that hasn’t been finished during the Christmas period. It can be a smart move to clear cupboards and kitchens out, so this room can look roomier, cleaner and free of items that could distract potential buyers.

Rearrange your furniture

An inexpensive way to tidy up your house and give it a whole new look is by moving your furniture around, making the best use of space. Interior design trends in 2022 will centre on reclaiming spaces in the home, so it’s a good idea for sellers to keep up with this.

Rachel Fernie a spokesperson for retailer, Hillary’s, advises: “You can alter the view you often have in a room or create a new focal point by rearranging wall art, shelving or simply houseplants – you don’t always need to move heavy furniture such as sofas or cabinets.”

Give your kitchen a deep clean

Christmas is when we tend to really put our kitchens to use, so its wise to give this area of your house a deep clean, especially if you’re trying to get it sold.

Your oven is an ideal place to start as it’s probably built up food residue from the grease from the past month. Fernie advises: “Arm yourself with an oven cleaner product of choice, scourer, a few resealable plastic bags, sponges, a pair of marigolds and an old toothbrush and you will be fully equipped to give your oven a thorough clean.”

Cleaning your fridge and freezer can be laborious but the effort is worthwhile. To do this, start by turning off your fridge and freezer and allowing it to defrost. After, remove all the racks and cabinet shelving and leave them to soak in soapy water.

Upcycling

The Oxford Languages defines upcycling as to “reuse (discarded objects or material) in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original.” Upcycling is predicted to be a popular interior design trend for 2022 alongside DIY.

As the New Year is when we take on resolutions, sellers can take up upcycling this January to give their property a refresh.

For those looking to start upcycling, Fernie suggests: “Making garden furniture out of wooden pallets, fitting a wooden blind, or simply giving your coffee table a lick of paint.”

The advantage of upcycling is that it helps to reduce waste by making use of what you already have as well as creating a bespoke piece of furniture that only you will possess.
